Inpay: Proud to support World Literacy Day

In 2019 studies showed that one in three young people in low-income countries could not read, with girls far more likely to be illiterate and unschooled then boys. Yet, millions could be lifted out of extreme poverty if they left school with basic reading skills.

Since then, Covid 19 has only made the situation worse.

Almost 10 million children may never return to school following lockdown, with many girls forced into marriage. For the ones who do return, the damage to them is yet unknown.

The shocking scale of global illiteracy and its stark link to extreme poverty is why Inpay is supporting World Literacy Day via its work with Room to Read.

Unesco’s World Literacy Day was created to remind us of the importance of literacy.

Room to Read is a non-profit organization aimed at improving literacy in the developing world who aim to help 40 million children by 2025.

Last year Inpay sent 35,000USD to support Room to Read’s work in Laos. The money went towards building libraries, purchasing children’s books and funding teacher training. This is part of our initiative to use the money typically spent on staff Christmas gifts on charitable donations instead.

We’ll also be educating our staff and asking them to reach out to the children in Laos via Room to Read’s system – where they can give encouragement to keep on reading, even if the schools are closed.

Inpay has strong goals in working towards a better world, with the aim to financially include 100 million people in the next 10 years.

Jacob Tackmann Thomsen, CEO of Inpay, said: “The work Room to Read does to help lift children out of extreme poverty via literacy is incredibly important. No child should be denied the skill of reading. That’s why I, and Inpay, are proud to support Room to Read and World Literacy Day.”

Catharina Baltus, Director Development, Europe says “International Literacy Day is an important reminder of the huge amount of work left to help raise literacy rates around the world. Inpay’s support has played an important role in helping us to transform the lives of millions of children through education and creating a world free from illiteracy and gender inequality.”
